Last week news of a particularly nasty incident on an American Airlines flight hit the blogs. Here at Gadling,
we covered it, then our very own flight attendant
posted her views on the story, and this weekend,
the passenger in question responded.
To cut a long story short - a passenger in first class on an AA flight asked for a glass of orange juice, and ended up getting off the plane with a written warning handed to him by a psychotic flight attendant.
The whole story just got even better - because an executive at
Delta Airlines is offering free gold elite status to any of the passengers involved in the "OJ Incident" on that flight.
To be honest, it's probably the kind of offer I would gladly accept, as being written up for a beverage request is not the kind of treatment that would ever have me set food on their airline again. Best of all, the Delta Airlines executive is an ex-AA employee. Talk about trying to screw with your former employer.
What annoys me more than anything is how American Airlines has tried to stay out of the story. The Consumerist attempted to contact them, but has not heard back. Even the official
American Airlines Twitter feed hasn't mentioned the incident. I'm always looking to hear the other side of any aviation incident, but if American Airlines chooses to ignore this, then I suspect people will just assume the initial story is indeed correct and that there is no "other side".

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that deals with dysfunctional emotions and feelings in a structured manner usually involving journaling, and reflecting on your journaled thoughts. The idea is to discover incorrect thinking and emotions. It has been found to be effective in quite a number of disorders including
depression and
post-traumatic stress disorder and
OCD.
CBTReferee [
iTunes Link] $4.99US, was written by Andrew Arrow to assist in his personal therapist-directed CBT. Finding himself always needing to carry around a notebook, since negative thoughts and feelings happen at random, he built quite a simple app for his own use. Finding it personally effective, he decided to put it in the app store, not really knowing if it would be useful for others. Feedback he received convinced him otherwise.
The app contains a brief description of CBT and clear instruction on how to properly utilize the app. It's just enough information to get started, and doesn't bog down in theory, so you can get up to speed quickly.
When a negative thought occurs, the app directs you to write it down immediately. Once done, tapping the next button takes you through a screen of ten potential fallacies inherent in your entry. Some of these include: Nothing or All (black and white thinking where one small flaw kills an entire concept), Conclusion Jumping (assuming facts that don't' exist), Emotions as Evidence (assuming that if you feel a certain way, it must be true), and many others.
With the journaled text visible, scroll through the list and check any of the options that you think may apply to your statement. Next, you are presented with a type-in screen titled:
Referee Says, where, based on your statement and the options you have chosen, you try to write as objective an assessment as possible, to negate the statement.

Bette Midler is more than a woman -- she's like an army. We're not just talking about the power of her singing voice; she's also a dancer, an actress, a comedienne, and a well-known humanitarian, and a champion of both the arts and the Earth.
Since 1995, she's been working on her New York Restoration Project (NYRP -- she founded it), which has been helping NYC get greener and cleaner. Just recently, Bette herself planted the 250,000th NYRP tree in a Queens neighborhood and unveiled a new garden near Yankee Stadium. Now, she's auctioning off some very unique experiences with celebrities on CharityFolks.com, experiences which would make unbeatable holiday gifts.
Among the current gifts available are:
- Meet John Stamos Backstage at Bye Bye Birdie & Enjoy 2 VIP House Seats - $1,500.00
- Private Lesson with Tennis Great John McEnroe & Roundtrip Travel on JetBlue Airways! - $2,750.00
- Meet Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Steve Winwood, One of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time According to Rolling Stone, with 2 VIP Tix to a 2010 European Show Date - $1,500.00
Those are current bid prices; buyouts are available at higher numbers. All the proceeds will benefit NYRP, which plans to plant 1 million trees by 2017 (and totally will). Other items include a chance to meet Cher, a walk-on role with Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd, a getaway to Richard Branson's Necker Island, and more. She's convinced nearly 100 of her celebrity friends to contribute, so keep your eye on the
NYRP CharityFolks page to see what's up for auction next.
"We've turned 55 vacant lots into beautiful community gardens and planted more than 250,000 trees, and we're just getting started, so I hope you'll join in the merriment by placing a bid today!" says Midler.

Last month, the
extremely certain pop-rock outfit
No Doubt sued Activision for allowing their likenesses to be used in
Band Hero, where players could perform the game's entire catalog of songs as the Stefani-fronted group. According to the complaint, this feature turned the band's appearance in the game into a "virtual karaoke circus act." Earlier this week,
The Hollywood Reporter dug up a countersuit filed against the band by Activision, who claimed No Doubt was in breach of a contract between the two parties, and had reaped unjust enrichment as a result.
Activision's main response to No Doubt's claim is that that the band requested their likenesses be limited to perform the band's own songs in-game -- however, it made this request "only after the
Band Hero programming was finalized." Activision seeks an unspecified amount of damages and interest from the band, as well as court and attorney fees, and a return of all payments dispersed to the band for their initial involvement. Jeez, Activision. Might as well go ahead and ask for the kitchen sink while you're at it.

Some might remember the original
True Crime games as an over-the-top action game where players take the role of a rogue agent, determined to infiltrate organized crime rings using mostly brute force. Well, it's been a few years, and the series is getting a bit of a reboot, sending players to the streets of Hong Kong to infiltrate the Triads. As the saying goes, the more things change...

In the midst of all the announcements and new trailers for upcoming games at the 2009
Spike TV Video Game Awards its easy to forget that there were some actual awards that were given out. The award nominees were selected by journalists but the winners were picked by fan votes. This year's Best PC Game award went to BioWare's
Dragon Age: Origins which also won for Best RPG.
Unfortunately PC games were few and far between in the other categories as the majority of winners were console only titles. You can check out the list of winners after the jump. We wish two things had happened after watching this year's awards ceremony. One was that there really should be a Best Strategy Game category and the other was that the cast of Jersey Shore had not showed up to present the Best Shooter Award. Ugh.

So we're aware of a few Motorola codenames right now:
Sholes Tablet,
Motus,
Zeppelin. One we haven't heard, though, is Titanium -- so when we found a so-labeled device in the FCC today, our interest was particularly piqued. Everything about this device (whatever it is) leads us to believe that it's destined for either Sprint or Verizon thanks to EV-DO Rev. A, and it's more than likely an Android-powered smartphone since it's got WiFi and Moto isn't doing much in the way of WinMo phones these days. Any clever ideas, conspiracies, or debunks?

ZaaM IT, creator of the
Halo 3 and
ODST armor generators, is at it again, this time with a nifty app for Windows Mobile devices. Called
WM Live, the application allows users to sync up their Xbox Live friends lists and check out their own stats as well as those of their friends. The app shows user
Avatars, gamercards, and game history, so you'll be able to keep track of what your friends have been up to from just about anywhere.
Best of all, the app is free, so there's really no reason not to pick it up if you have a Windows Mobile device. Also, since it complies with the Xbox Community Developers Program, it will never
get pulled. Keep in mind that it's still in beta, though ZaaM IT plans to acquire feedback and improve the application in later releases.

Do not adjust your computer screen: what you see here is a piece of genius. A labor of love spanning two years, two hemispheres, two countries and over 3000 images... I give to you, the All-Sky Milky Way Panorama -- version 2! And, you'll be glad to hear, it was stitched together with open-source software.
Well, not just open-source software: he needed a lot of processing power too, though nothing beyond a beefed-up home computer (it ran Linux, of course). And then there was the problem of actually stitching it together, and making sure every star and and entity in the visible cosmos
looks correct, relative to everything else in the sky -- for that, he used catalogs of star data and sky background data from Pioneer 10 and 11. For the entire creative process, and a list of the programs he used,
check out the creator's site.
The final image, which you can probably obtain if you're a student,
and if ask the creator Axel Mellinger nicely, clocks in at an impressive 650 megapixels and 7.7 gigabytes.
But the best bit, which I dutifully saved until last, is that you can
surf around the maximum-resolution image using
another open-source application called
IIPImage. Enjoy!
